Update of the L4 SMOS SMAP Merged Brightness Temperature product

The SMOS Level 4 SMAP Compatible Brightness Temperature (L4SBT) provides a single incidence angle unbiased Brightness Temperature (BT) with respect to SMAP Enhanced L3BT V005, based on the daily multi-angular SMOS Level 3 BT over land. It is available as a daily composite for each polarization and orbit on the Global 25km EASE-Grid 2.0, and now spans the 11/2010-12/2024 period.
The update includes :

  • correction of the missing data in June 2021-December 2022 ;
  • extension until December 2024.

Hereunder are the bias of (a) the SMOS L3 40° BT, taken as reference, and (b) the scaled SMOS BT (L4SBT), both computed with respect to (wrt.) the SMAP L3 E V006 BT, over the year 2024, in horizontal polarization for AM orbits (i.e. SMOS Asc, SMAP Desc). Note that, starting from 2023, the SMAP L3 Enhanced BT product is not available in version 5 anymore but in version 6, the latter has thus been used for comparison in the figures (a) and (b).

(a) Bias of the SMOS L3 40° BT (reference) wrt. SMAP Enhanced L3BT V006, for H-polarization, AM orbits, in 2024

(b) Bias of the scaled SMOS L4SBT wrt. SMAP Enhanced L3BT V006, for H-polarization, AM orbits, in 2024
